I grew up lighting the four #Advent candles—hope, love, joy, peace—so named for the frequency with which they come up in the gospels and Paul’s letters. But this year, I wonder, how well do they communicate _adventus_ time, or have they become too diluted sitting on the shelf, as they are, next to the jingle bells? If the full meaning of the term ‘advent’ points towards the Coming One, the Anointed Messiah who brings the reign of God to cover the earth, and to our looking for their coming on the horizon, then it may be time to re-inscribe our Advent candles.

Visited the woods today: said hello to the sisters, arching to the sky as they do, their outer layer inviting worlds within worlds to exist; the creek tumbles along, flush from the heavy rains. No signs of the summer’s heat and drought remain, yet it is recorded in the tree rings and residual damage among the plants and in the ground. The plants will remember. They always do. 🌿

This is a picture of a flashlight hitting the ceiling when the power has been out for several hours, only to flash on for a handful of seconds, followed by the sound of a transformer blowing. Yup, it’s fall in the PNW.

What you do not see here are the three stations of a baptismal reaffirmation liturgy that I tested out yesterday with a few willing and gracious souls as we hiked up to the middle falls of the Wallace River.
